Captain Phil—USCG Licensed Master (100 Ton)

Ever since Phil Kinnison was 12 years old and he acquired his first boat, his philosophy has agreed with the philosophy in the story of “Wind in the Willows”.  There it is stated, “nothing, absolutely nothing, is half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats”.

He joined the U.S. Navy where his time was spent on Submarines.  Since leaving the military, he has sailed on a wide variety of boats—from sailing his first small dingy in Long Island Sound to sailing ocean racing yachts to Mexico and across the Pacific to Hawaii.  He has been associated with the boating community in southern California for many years, including his time serving as Commodore of one of the San Diego Yacht Clubs.
Phil, has been a licensed with the U.S. Coast Guard as a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer, and as a Charter Captain, for over 25 years.

Phil likes to introduce the sport of sailing to others and enjoys sharing his knowledge with them.

ErmaFirst Mate E.J.

E.J. Kinnison has been cooking on boats and compiling and experimenting with recipes for years and, in the process, has acquired a large and varied collection of cook books.  Perhaps the most difficult thing for her to do, when moving aboard, was to leave her many cook books behind.   However, she still has a large collection of favorite recipes on board.

She has always enjoyed trying new foods and exotic recipes from other lands—frequently adapting recipes in order to please the palates of her family and friends.  E.J.’s interest in foreign cuisine, at one time, even resulted in her owning an oriental restaurant…………  As a result of this interest in new and different foods, the food presented on Brier Patch is not the usual snacks and beer offered on most charter boats.
